Because architectural drawings usually place it near the top of the diagram, immediately below the processor but above the PCI bus, and because in western cultures, maps are invariably oriented with the North compass direction at the top of the drawing.
In other cultures, this map orientation is not customary. Some engineers may find the name of the North (or South) bridge a point of confusion. Once they know it is unimportant, however, they can focus on real problems, not on their uncertainties.
